What is diabetes?

Diabetes means your blood sugar stays too high because your body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it well. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type in adults, and Indians tend to develop it at a younger age and lower body weight. Many people have no symptoms for years, which is why testing matters. With the right plan, sugar can be well controlled.

Key tests: fasting sugar, post-meal sugar and HbA1c.
Prediabetes: HbA1c 5.7–6.4%, a warning sign that can often be reversed.
Why control matters: it protects eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.

What’s your Indian Diabetes Risk Score?

The Indian Diabetes Risk Score (IDRS), developed by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, is a simple screening tool for Indian adults. It isn't a diagnosis. Only a blood test can confirm diabetes.

1. Your age
2. Waist size (measured at the navel)
3. Physical activity
4. Family history of diabetes
Already diabetic and feeling very unwell? Very high sugar with vomiting, drowsiness or confusion, or very low sugar with sweating, shaking or fainting, needs emergency care.
Why control matters

High sugar works silently, for years.

Uncontrolled diabetes slowly damages blood vessels and nerves throughout the body, often without symptoms until problems are advanced.

The good news: good sugar, BP and cholesterol control, plus yearly screening, prevents or delays most complications.
  • Eyes: diabetic retinopathy and vision loss
  • Kidneys: gradual kidney damage
  • Feet: numbness, ulcers and infections
  • Heart & brain: heart attack and stroke
  • Infections and slow healing
Tests for diabetes

Simple blood tests
give a clear answer.

Most tests are done in our lab, often with same-day reports.

  1. Fasting blood sugar

After 8–10 hours without food. Water is allowed.

  2. Post-meal sugar

Two hours after a meal, to see how your body handles food.

  3. HbA1c

Your average sugar over about 3 months. No fasting needed.

  4. Baseline health checks

Kidney function, cholesterol, urine protein, BP, eye and foot checks.

Understanding HbA1c: below 5.7% is normal, 5.7–6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or above suggests diabetes, usually confirmed with a repeat test. A fasting sugar of 126 mg/dL or more also suggests diabetes. Your doctor will interpret results with your history.

FAQs

Questions about
diabetes treatment.

Don’t see your question? Send it to us and our team will call you back.

Ask a question
What is a normal HbA1c level?

An HbA1c below 5.7% is considered normal. 5.7–6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or above suggests diabetes, usually confirmed with a repeat test. Your target, if you have diabetes, is set by your doctor.

Can type 2 diabetes be reversed?

Prediabetes can often be reversed, and some people with early type 2 diabetes reach normal sugar levels with weight loss and lifestyle change. It needs ongoing monitoring, as sugar can rise again.

How often should I get my HbA1c checked?

Usually every 3 months when control is not at target or treatment changes, and every 6 months when stable. Your doctor will advise.

What is the Indian Diabetes Risk Score?

The IDRS is a simple screening tool developed by the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation. It uses age, waist size, physical activity and family history. A score of 60 or more indicates high risk and a blood test is advised.

Is insulin harmful?

No. Insulin is a natural hormone and one of the most effective treatments for high sugar. Your doctor will teach you how to use it safely and spot low sugar.

Do you offer diabetes check-up packages?

Yes. Ask about our diabetes check-up, which typically includes sugar tests, HbA1c, kidney function, cholesterol and urine tests along with a consultation.
