A NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) is a special unit for newborn babies who need extra help after birth: babies born premature, with low birth weight, breathing difficulty, infection or severe jaundice. Babies are kept warm and monitored closely, and get treatment such as oxygen, IV fluids, phototherapy and feeding support.
Most NICU babies go home healthy. These are the usual reasons they need extra care first.
